En octobre-novembre 1958, Bill Haley et ses Comets effectuent une tournée en Europe et dans quelques pays d'Afrique du Nord. Par ordre chronologique : Italie, France, Tunisie, Algérie, Autriche, Allemagne de l'Ouest, Belgique, Espagne où le régime de Franco mit fin au programme. Spécialiste de Bill Haley, manager des Comets réunifiés de 1991 à 2018, le Munichois Klaus Kettner, né en 1965, donne un éclairage fort documenté sur cet évènement de l'histoire du rock.
Ce livre est un must pour tout fan de Bill Haley ou plus largement de rock-and-roll : photos inédites dont certaines avec Elvis (alors militaire en Allemagne) venu assister à quelques concerts de Bill, coupures de presse, témoignages de spectateurs, de musiciens, notamment des Comets tels que Johnny Grande ou Franny Beecher ayant participé à la tournée.
Par son travail, Klaus Kettner montre comment la vague rock s'est répandue hors d'Amérique du Nord, rapidement associée aux émeutes de la jeunesse, qui accède pour la première fois à sa propre musique, en particulier à Berlin (au Palais des sports) et Paris (à l'Olympia) : fauteuils cassés, jets de projectiles, bagarres... (De telles manifestations avaient eu lieu précédemment à l'Olympia lors d'un concert de Sidney Bechet en 1955.)
"Je n'entendais rien à part la batterie"
Parmi les témoignages, je retiens celui d'un fan, de Mannheim (Allemagne), p. 203, qui se souvient de la très faible amplification des instruments. Quand les spectateurs se mettaient à hurler, dès la première chanson, "je n'entendais rien à part la batterie et, peut-être quelques notes de saxo (...). Et pourtant, après le spectacle, nous disions : "Mec, c'était quelque chose."
Parenthèse entre les concerts, le tournage du film J'y suis, j'y reste, avec Catherina Valente, est décrit, avec de nombreuses photos du tournage et des sessions d'enregistrement de "Viva La Rock and Roll", "Hot Dog Buddy Buddy" et "Whoa Mabel", spécialement prévues pour le film.
Ainsi, Bill Haley ouvre en 1958 la voie en Europe à ses confrères rockers, comme Gene Vincent, qui déjà commencent à perdre leur popularité aux Etats-Unis.

In October-November 1958, Bill Haley and his Comets toured Europe and a few countries in North Africa. In chronological order: Italy, France, Tunisia, Algeria, Austria, West Germany, Belgium, Spain where the Franco regime ended the program. A specialist in Bill Haley, manager of the reunified Comets from 1991 to 2018, Munich-based Klaus Kettner, born in 1965, provides well-documented insight into this event in rock history.
This book is a must for any fan of Bill Haley or more broadly of rock-and-roll: unpublished photos, some of which with Elvis (then a soldier in Germany) who came to attend some of Bill's concerts, press clippings, testimonies from spectators, musicians, notably Comets such as Johnny Grande or Franny Beecher who participated in the tour. Through his work, Klaus Kettner shows how the rock wave spread outside North America, quickly associated with the riots of the youth, who accessed their own music for the first time, in particular in Berlin (at the Palais des sports ) and Paris (at the Olympia): broken armchairs, thrown projectiles, fights... (Such demonstrations had previously taken place at the Olympia during a Sidney Bechet concert in 1955.)
“I couldn’t hear anything except the drums”
Among the testimonies, I remember that of a fan, from Mannheim (Germany), p. 203, which remembers the very low amplification of the instruments. When the audience started screaming, from the first song, "I couldn't hear anything except the drums and maybe a few sax notes (...). And yet, after the show, we were saying: 'Man, it was something."
A break between concerts, the filming of the film Hier bin Ich, hier bleib Ich, with Catherina Valente, is described with numerous photos from the filming and recording sessions of "Viva La Rock and Roll", "Hot Dog Buddy Buddy" and "Whoa Mabel", specially planned for the film.
Thus, in 1958, Bill Haley paved the way in Europe for his fellow rockers, like Gene Vincent, who were already beginning to lose their popularity in the United States.
